Lawn Mower Starter Solenoids

Starter solenoids are ideal for applications that use small power. Smaller type solenoids are often used in battery operated set ups. The actual life of the starter solenoid is greatly affected by the outside factors, such as temperature, dust and dirt. In cases where the solenoid is used with continuous voltage supply the overall life expectancy of the unit decreases. A solenoid that is mounted vertically will, on the other hand, have a longer life. So, how do starter solenoids operate in a typical starting system? The normal starting system includes a motor, starter solenoid, ignition switch and a small battery. After the ignition key is turned on, the electric current flows into the starter solenoid.
When the solenoid coil becomes an electromagnet, it will pull the plunger into the coil. The plunger then brings the pair of contacts together which in turn allows high voltage to get to the starter motor. In cases where the starter solenoid is mounted on the starter itself, the plunger will also serve the purpose to hold down the starter to mesh with the teeth on the flywheel.
