How to Fix a Lawn Mower

As home owners, most of us have lawns to care for and maintain and in order to do so, we have to own a lawn mower. The cost of lawn mowers can be extremely high and in order to preserve the mower and increase its lifetime of use, we need to maintain it properly. There are times when the lawn mower needs repaired and a few simple steps telling us how to fix a lawn mower can save time, money and relieve stress on us, the mower and our lawns.

One of the biggest issues with lawn mowers is proper maintenance, if you follow a few simple steps there will be no need to learn how to fix a lawn mower. The first preventative measure is to ensure you are using the proper fuel for your mower. You should be able to find the information you need in your owner’s manual, whatever fuel is recommended for the mower should be used. Cheaper fuel can create problems in the mowers engine and shorten the lifetime of its use.

One of the others issues that arise and will cause you to find the need to learn how to fix a lawn mower is the blades. If you begin to experience uneven cutting or choppy looking grass after mowing, you may need to sharpen or replace the mowers blades. How to fix lawn mower basics in the owner’s manual will show you the proper procedure for removing your mowers blades and replacing them. You should always wear heavy duty gloves when you are working with the mowers blades and be sure to disable the mower by removing its spark plug. The mower should be stabilized and secured so it will not tip over and the blade secured so it will not spin and accidentally cut you. Before you place the mower on its side, empty the gas and any oil from the mower to avoid a messy clean up. The single bolt or nut that holds the blade in place will be removed with a wrench by turning to the left to loosen it. Once the blade is removed, you can either sharpen it yourself or take it to a professional to be sharpened for under $20.

If you decide to sharpen the blade yourself, you will need a grinder, some experience and patience. If the blades need to be replaced, you can measure the blade and then go to your local hardware store to find a new one. Learning how to fix a lawn mower is not rocket science, but it can be tedious if you do not know where to begin.

For issues with the mower not starting or not running properly you may need to replace the spark plugs, change the oil or there could be more extensive repairs that may be needed. If you do not know how to fix a lawn mower, it is suggested you take it to a professional to be looked at.
