Lawn Mower Maintenance Basics

Lawn Mower Maintenance

As home owners, we all have lawns to care for and this means we most likely own a lawn mower. The cost to replace the lawn mower is ridiculous compared to the time it takes for lawn mower maintenance. There are two different types of common lawn mower designs, the rotary and the cylinder mowers and each has to be maintenance regularly to ensure proper cut and precision.

Rotary Lawn Mower Maintenance:

The rotary lawn mower is one of the most common types of mowers found in most households. The model is a very simple mower to maintain, this is partly why it’s so popular with consumers. The main concern for rotary lawn mower maintenance is keeping the blades clean and sharp. When you mow your

lawn, the mowers blades can come in contact with not only the blades of grass, but dirt and rocks as well. You should check the blades after each mow and rinse them as needed to keep them from building up dirt clumps and dulling the blade.

You should oil the rotary mechanism regularly as well, ensuring that there is no excess rust, dirt or rocks that can damage your mower. You will usually notice the grass being cut unevenly or the blades digging into the ground when your blades have been neglected for too long. The mower will also use more fuel as it is having to work harder to cut your grass. If the blade is beyond repair, you can find lawn mower replacement blades with great quality and low pricing.

Cylinder Lawn Mower Maintenance:

Cylinder lawn mower maintenance is a bit more detailed. The first thing you should do is check to make sure you are using the correct fuel that is recommended for your mower. You should be able to find the information on the type of gas that is recommended in the owner’s manual. If you are frequently mowing your grass or the weather is extremely hot, you will need to check the air filter and the spark plugs to ensure they do not need to be replaced. It is a good rule of thumb to replace these at least twice a year, once when you begin to mow and once during the summer season.

The blades should be kept clean and sharp as well, it is recommended that you sharpen the blades as necessary and replace them if they become damaged from rocks or other hard surfaces. If you do not know how to replace or sharpen the blades yourself, you can get them done by a professional for under $20.

If you are planning on removing the blades for lawn mower maintenance, be sure to be safe. Always wear heavy duty gloves, disable the mower by removing the spark plugs and remove any gas or oil from the mower to avoid messy clean ups. The mower will be turned over on its side and should be stabilized to avoid tipping and the blade secured to avoid it spinning and cutting you will trying to remove the bolt that holds it in place. By following these simple basic steps you can increase the life of your mower and enjoy a healthier lawn.
