Gutter Cleaning Using a Pressure Washer

Gutter Cleaning

Gutter cleaning can be a difficult and time-consuming task, but it is much easier with the help of a pressure washer. Gutters should be cleaned at least twice per year to unclog them. Leaves, sticks, and other material can clog gutters and downspouts, causing water damage on your home. This often-overlooked task causes many homeowners great dread, but it doesn’t have to. You don’t even need a ladder to clean the debris out of the gutters using a pressure washer. Cleaning the gutters should be done in the spring, summer, or fall, so long as the temperature isn’t near freezing.

For gutter cleaning using a pressure washer, you’ll need a pressure washer, telescoping wand, and gutter cleaner attachment. Flexible wands can be twisted and bent to spray exactly where you need the water, and it will retain its shape even with very high-pressure water. Telescoping wands are designed to spray water as high as 24 feet in the air, easily reaching your gutters. A gutter cleaner wand fits on the end of this long wand. It can be used to clean gutters, eaves, and pitched roofs safely from the ground, offering you precise control over the water streams.

The first step to gutter cleaning is to clear the downspouts. Direct a stream of water with high GPM (at least 2.5 gallons per minute) through the downspout until the water runs freely out the bottom. Increase the pressure if there appears to be a clog, and do not move on until the water runs out the end of the downspout. Then use the pressure washer to wash the debris in the gutters through the downspouts, working in small sections at a time. Be sure to periodically clean the debris from the end of the downspouts as you work, or they could become clogged again.

This safe method for gutter cleaning eliminates the need for crawling on the roof, scooping debris from your gutters by hand. Plus, it is much more thorough than this method, as the high-pressure water can blast any dirt, moss, or mildew from the inside of your gutters, requiring no scrubbing or other difficult work on your part. A pressure washer makes this job much easier and leaves your gutters even cleaner. After cleaning the gutter in this manner, simply rake any debris that has fallen into your yard, although most will go through the downspouts. Then use the pressure washer to gently clean any debris off the outside of your gutters.

The main benefit of gutter cleaning using a pressure washer is that it can be done from the ground, requiring no ladders. Plus, in most cases you won’t even need to get your hands dirty to complete this task. Gutter cleaning in this manner takes much less time than the manual method of cleaning them; the whole task can usually be completed in an afternoon. In fact, you may save so much time that you’ll decide to pressure wash the entire side of your house while you’re at it.
