Maintaining Your Mower

Repairing lawn mowers can be a tough job if you don’t know what you’re doing. Repairing a riding lawnmower can be even more difficult because they have many more parts than walk behind mowers. Also when you have to replace or repair the lawnmower bearings bushings you may be in for a little extra hard work. To get the most out of your riding lawn mower you should perform regular maintenance, such as maintenance to the bearing and bushing, to ensure that it continues to run as well as possible.

After you’ve been running your lawnmower for a few months you will want to check several aspects of the mower to ensure it’s still in top condition. The parts that you should check are the oil, oil filter, air pressure in the lawn mower wheels, the John Deere mower belt, the lawn mower replacement blades, the air filter, the bearing and bushing, and the lubrication of the parts.

Start by checking the oil and oil filter, Consult your manual for how often it should be changed. In most cases you’ll simply need to change it every few months. However some riding mowers require it to be more often. After you’ve checked the oil and filter you will need to check the air pressure in the tires. Like any other vehicle the air pressure in the tires are important. If you don’t have the proper air in the tires you’ll get bad gas mileage on your mower and you also run the risk of the tires or the rims that the tires sit on being damaged. To avoid having to replace these items check your tire air pressure before every use.

Bearing and Bushing

The next section of your mower that you will want to focus on is the blades and the system that drives them. Every few months you should check to ensure that the blades are still sharp. Dull blades won’t cut the grass as easily and you may end up becoming frustrated with why. You will also want to ensure that the blades are secured so that they don’t fly off while in use and damage the machine or hurt someone.

The final section that you will want to focus on is the undercarriage of the unit. You will want to ensure that the undercarriage is clean and free off grass. You will also want to check the bearing and bushing under the front end of the mower. You will need to check to ensure that the bearing and bushing are secured. If your bearing and bushing are loose then you will want to consider getting it serviced by a professional. Finally you will want to check the air filter. Air filters can become dirty and clogged very fast therefore every couple of months you will need to check and possibly replace the air filter.

Keeping your riding lawn mower maintained properly will ensure that it lasts for a long time. By keeping it clean and cared for you will lessen the likelihood of something breaking and thereby increasing the life of your mower.
